Since moving to Newark, Delaware, my husband and I have discovered the craft of pizza. Due to the East Coast influence, most of the pizza shops in the area are New York style and have pizzas under a "white pie" category. Being from the midwest, I hadn't really heard the commonality of a white pizza which I found out merely meant that there was no tomato sauce. I was a big fan of this since marinara and tomato-based sauces weren't always my favorite. Ian was infatuated with this little shop because of its presence as a "nano-brewery," only containing a one and a half barrel of beer for brewing! The pizza we decided upon was the "Verdure" white pie. It consisted of mozzarella, ricotta cheese, spinach, and plum tomatoes. We ate an entire large pizza just between the two of us. We can't wait to go here again to imbibe their very craft beer and amazing food with friends.
"From the cow to the cone" is the motto of the UDairy Creamery. This awesome little ice cream parlor is located on the south campus at the University of Delaware. Just yards away, you can actually see the dairy cows who produce the milk that goes into making this great frozen treat! It's a great way for the students to learn ways of entrepreneurship, while creating a hotspot for the community of Newark.
Having adopted a black lab when marrying my husband, we were intent on finding a good dog park. The ones that we had known about back home were about 9 acres of fenced in area. There was a small pond, a few benches, a gazebo, and a water hose. Now that we are in Delaware, we have come to find the amazing amount of parks in the state. The focus on nature preservation here is admirable and makes for a great in the outdoors. We stumbled upon the Lums Pond State Park dog park, which is a hidden oasis of two miles of open field and a small lake beach. It was awesome to let our dog off her leash for the first time and splash around in the water. All the other dogs that came were also water-loving and friendly, which made for a great experience. This state park also consists of camping (with yurts too!), trails (for horses and humans), and a zipline! This hidden gem is definitely a destination spot if you're in the area and need to let your pooch run free.
Every year since my sophomore year of college, I have had to work some type of sports event on my birthday due to my career in athletic training. This year was no different. My husband made sure to do everything he could to make it as best as he could for me and I was delighted to head to a Korean restaurant to indulge in food that reminded me of my family and good cuisine.
So, basically I'm going to show you how to make a quick and easy, oil-burning candle made out of an orange peel! I have done this twice successfully with both versions of cloves, hence the variation of photos. This candle will last 3-4 hours, but can be prolonged if you watch the oil level and keep adding to it. The wick will eventually burn out though. What you'll need: Orange Olive oil Cloves (whole or ground) I volunteered a couple hours, twice a week, for a couple weeks at the University of Delaware botanic gardens. I met a fabulously interesting group of women in their 50's and older who taught me a thing or two about horticulture. Mostly I spent the time pulling weeds in the hot sun and re-potting plants in the greenhouse. It was gorgeously rewarding and the mindless work was soothing for any stress I was feeling. I started to realize that volunteering is the absolute best way to learn a skill while helping give back to the community and creating a network along the way.
